His Holiness the Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa, popularly known as H.H. Kenting Tai Situ Rinpoche, is proclaimed in number of sacred texts as the incarnation of Bodhisattva Maitreya in Tushita heaven, crowned as the future Buddha in 623 B.C. and subsequent incarnations as Guru Padmasambhava. In 1012 A.D. he was born in Tibet as Marpa the Great Enlightened Translator, who introduced the sacred Kagyu lineage from India. The lineage continued with his disciple Milarepa, then Marpa’s incarnation Gampo Tsultrim Nyingpo and as the first Tai Situ Drogon Rechen in 1148.  In 1407 the enlightened Chokyi Gyaltsen received the title Imperial Preceptor (ཀྭན་ཏིང་དབེན་ཐོང་མེའུ་ཙི་གོ་སཱི།) “Kuan Ting Yuan Thong Miyu Tsi Guo Shi” from Emperor Yongle. In 1727 H.H. Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa the Great, popularly known as Situ Panchen, founded Mount of Excellence, a non-sectarian, multi-disciplinary Palpung Institution in Tibet, which he established as the Palpung Monastic Seat. There are 300 pre-Buddhist and Buddhist monasteries, as well as 180 monasteries of the Kagyu lineage, under the spiritual supervision of Palpung Monastic Seat and its Supreme Head, His Holiness the Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa.

From there he later traveled to India, following His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for refuge. He spent a number of years in Sikkim, Bhutan, and West Bengal until age 22. During this time he received ordinations from H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, as well as the entirety of basic and advanced Buddhist studies and transmissions from a great number of eminent masters. In 1976 at age 23, H.H. the Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa established Palpung Sherabling Monastic Seat in Himachal Pradesh, India.
